What I look for

Signs the touch layer may be at fault

A clear picture with dead areas, false presses or no touch response gives me a useful lead for the digitiser check.

No touch response

The display lights up, but pressing the screen does nothing.

Ghost touches

Menus move or buttons select themselves without a finger on the glass.

Dead areas

One side, corner or strip of the touchscreen stops responding.

Incorrect selections

Pressing one option activates another part of the screen.

Some symptoms need a wider diagnosis. Freezing, rebooting, no audio, boot failure, a blank picture, coloured lines or ink-like LCD bleed can point to software, display or head-unit faults instead.
